News and blog

Welcome to the blog.

We went to David Brownell's (Aries Farm) on Smith Neck Rd. yesterday to see his new lambs. If you have had ice cream in the summer at Salvador's, then you have probably seen David's sheep out grazing in the fields behind the big milk bottle. It is a great farm and we are renting 3-4 acres of vegetable land from David. We are really excited to be working with David and taking over management of his flock of sheep in April. David has a number of different breeds and has been selecting for sheep that do well in this area. Many of the ewes (female sheep) are Finn/Dorset crosses and were breed to a Dorper ram (Big Daddy Dorper) last fall. As you can see, the results are adorable. There are over 20 lambs now, and we are expecting the ewes that aren't lambing now to give birth in June. If all goes well, we will have lamb for sale in late winter and hopefully in a year's time we will have wool to sell.

There are also some sheep living at Merrylegs Farm (the other farm we are renting land from). They are soay sheep, an old breed from the UK. The black and white guy is a pygmy goat aptly named Billy the Goat.

In addition to sheep, our day old baby chicks will arrive on Valentine's Day (a rather nice present) and will be housed at Merrylegs. These 125 chicks will be our egg laying army and will start laying eggs sometime in July.  Hopefully the nice weather will stay around long enough for our chicks to get a good start in life.
